BDP )
Interdisciplinary practice BDP led the design of Glasgow Queen Street Station Redevelopment from initial concept to completion of detailed design for construction. The design of the station provides resilience for a doubling in passenger numbers by 2042, whilst supporting the objectives of Network Rail’s EGIP programme, cutting journey times on clean, green electric trains.
As construction of this nationally significant rail project nears completion, BDP’s team will present its story showcasing the fascinating journey that led from electrification and platform extensions, to a design opportunity resulting in a contemporary landmark station reflecting its role as a gateway to Glasgow.

Title:
Embedding carbon management throughout a project workstream to reduce carbon emissions
Synopsis:
With the backdrop of Scottish Government commitment of decarbonising Scotland’s Railway by 2035, and Glasgow hosting the UN Climate Change COP26 this year, this presentation will focus on how the Scottish rail industry can embed carbon management to help quantify and reduce carbon emissions throughout a project workstream, including clear actions and job specific roles, and applying carbon calculation and assessment tools.
ABB Power Grids
ABB Power Grids have been at the forefront of sustainable mobility and provides innovative solution for electrical power and automation relative to railways and electric vehicles.
Battery and Hybrid trains provide a sustainable means of transportation and are a key to achieving decarbonisation of the Scottish Rail Network and indeed for the rest of the UK from 2035 onwards.
Utilising intelligent energy management system with grid connections to renewables sources of supply, combination of terminal and flash charging systems (utilising both AC and DC systems) ensures that the on-board energy storage system is fully charged and optimised at the end of the line without requiring longer stoppage periods.
Our cost optimisation tool helps size the entire system, on-board batteries and charging points on the line to meet a lower total cost of operation and ownership.
12.15 – 12.45 – Seminar Session 2
Jacobs
The presentation will cover:
  • The main choices for power sources for future rail services, including diesel, electro-diesel bi-mode, electric (including discrete electrification), battery electric and hydrogen
  • The economic, sustainability (including decarbonisation) and operational factors that affect the choice for different types of service, including the balance between them, the phasing of vehicle and infrastructure investment and putting passengers first
  • Case studies of projects that Jacobs has been involved in from Merseyside (potential benefits of battery units), Dublin (electric v batteries v electro-diesel bi-mode) and Toronto (hydrogen v electrification)

BOC
BOC is leading the way in the development of hydrogen infrastructure for mobility. Our team developed and operates the highest performing bus refuelling station in Europe, the Kittybrewster Hydrogen Facility in Aberdeen. Our parent company Linde is already working with Alstom in Europe to power hydrogen fuelled trains.
In the UK, we are working closing with government, councils and partners to introduce the country’s first hydrogen fuelled trains, supported by strategically located storage and refuelling sites. We have the capability to produce and dispense large volumes of hydrogen that will fuel trains by 2022 and will give hydrogen a valuable role to play in the future of rail and net zero.
Intilion
In recent times Li-Ion batteries became available for rail traction. Diesel battery hybrid shunting locos for emission free shunting in halls and fuel saving due to optimized operation of the diesel engines became state of the are in the last few years.
For working machines “yellow cars” battery systems are used for emission free operation in tunnels and for more silent work during day and night.
All mayor train manufacturers are offering new trainsets with Li-Ion batteries for catenary free operation of EMUs.
In this seminar the possibilities and boundaries of Li-Ion batteries for traction applications in yellow cars, passenger trains and shunting locos will be explained.
It will be shown how Li-Ion batteries work in combination with fuel cells, diesel engines and pantographs. The possibilities for new trainsets and for refurbishments will be presented. A small part of the seminar will be used to show, how passenger safety is guaranteed.
12.45 – 13.45 - Lunch
13.55 – 14.25 Seminar Session 3
SPL Powerlines
SPL shall be presenting a technical seminar on the efficient approach to installing foundations on site. SPL have recently developed a high capacity pile cap that increased the usage of a 610CHS foundations on projects.
SPL identified there was an inconsistent approach to installing foundations on projects so have now developed a standard 610 CHS pile complete with a high capacity pile cap that can increase its usage considerably. Recent application has seen the deployment of the standard pile and high capacity cap used on 93% of the foundations installed.
By standardising the design and installation, projects can be delivered quicker by removing the need for wet trades. Additionally projects have experienced a significant improvement on programme durations and quality of installation. Innovations such as this will continue to assist with the current de-carbonisation programme.
Leica Geosystems
Virtualising Assets through 3D Digitisation.
As market leaders in 3D capture technology, we will demonstrate how rail assets can be captured quickly, accurately and remotely using 3D scanning technologies with little to no disruption.
Through innovative design and mobile operation, our systems are delivering a complete digital picture for asset management and design. Virtually visit a facility or structure, digitally design to analyse clashes and identify defects and use the digital truth to evaluate and visualise your projects and communicate them globally.
Improved safety, faster turnarounds, and easier access to accurate 3D facility documentation allows for better decisions and cost reductions, all delivered with Leica Geosystems 3D scanning solutions.
Trelleborg
