Liam Sumpter

Liam was appointed to the position of Managing Director for Network Rail Scotland in April 2024.

Liam’s 22-year career in the UK rail industry has spanned a range of operational, functional and leadership roles, where he has developed a clear focus on driving performance improvement, customer satisfaction and employee engagement.

Liam began his career as a graduate in the Engineering Innovation & Examination team with Railtrack in 2002, before moving to the Finance team in 2004 and ultimately being appointed as Financial Controller of the Sussex route in 2007.

Liam went on to spend time as part of the maintenance team in the role of Infrastructure Maintenance Delivery Manager (IMDM) with the Delivery Units in Brighton and Croydon before being appointed as the position of Area Director for West Midlands & Chilterns Rail in 2013.

Liam went on to spend three years working with Arriva Rail North as Regional Director, before returning to Network Rail as the Chief Operating Officer and more latterly, Route Director for Scotland.

Liam is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
