About Rail North: 2025

We are delighted to launch our Rail North black tie networking dinner at the Emirates, Old Trafford. The purpose is to bring the key stakeholders responsible for delivering some of the country’s major projects together to discuss delivery, and allow the supply chain visibility of workstreams.

The strategic objectives are:
• To deliver a resilient and reliable train service.
• To spend taxpayers’ money wisely and deliver efficiency.
• To keep our people and the public safe

During CP7 major investment projects including the TransPennine Route Upgrade, East West Rail, Midlands Rail Hub and our Manchester infrastructure upgrades will transform travel across the region, providing faster, greener and more reliable journeys, and support levelling-up. The renewals programme will begin the modernisation of the north end of the West Coast Main Line, where infrastructure was last modernised in the early 1970s, supporting improved reliability and the introduction of HS2 services over the longer term. In addition, the need to drive further decarbonisation of the network to support the region hit their net zero emissions targets whilst creating cleaner, greener spaces for the public to enjoy has never been more important.

The key targets to invest the £8.2bn allocated for the region include:

SAFETY

• Sustain the workforce safety improvements made in CP6, with Workforce FWI at 0.050 by the end of CP7.
• Deliver key milestones to improve passenger safety.

TRAIN SERVICE DELIVERY

• Maintain a good level of passenger train performance
• Improve passenger satisfaction at managed stations
• Reduce Freight Cancellations
• Support Freight growth by the end of CP7.

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

• 21% reduction in carbon emissions by the end of CP7.
• 4.0% net gain in biodiversity.
• 5.0% improvement in air quality at our stations.

EFFICIENCY

• Control our finances robustly to ensure we spend every pound of our settlement wisely.
• Deliver over £770m of direct efficiency savings.

PEOPLE

• Improve colleague engagement from 50% to 53%.
• Create a robust strategic workforce plan, improving how to plan people resource for the future.
• Upskill our leaders and line managers through new development programmes.
