Interim Managing Director, Wales & Western

Skills and Experience

Mark was appointed as Managing Director for Network Rail’s Wales and Western Region in November 2025.

Following a successful career in the automotive sector, Mark joined the railway industry in 2009, initially leading stations and infrastructure teams on the High Speed 1 network. He later managed a large maintenance team as Infrastructure Maintenance Delivery Manager in Croydon before becoming Area Director for West Coast Mainline South in 2015.

Mark subsequently served as Chief Operating Officer for both the London North Western and South East routes, followed by four years as Route Director for Wessex. During this time, he partnered closely with train and freight operators to deliver significant improvements across the railway system and strengthened relationships with key stakeholders.

Most recently, Mark held the role of Director of Engineering and Asset Management for the Southern Region, where he played a key role in introducing the innovative Southern Renewals Enterprise.

Responsibilities

Leading the geographically diverse region of Wales & Western, Mark’s priorities are focused on achieving the best outcomes for passengers, stakeholders and communities.

As the only region that combines a country – Wales, with its distinct culture, language, history and politics – with an area of England, Wales & Western has a unique set of opportunities and strengths.

Mark supports the region’s 5,100 colleagues to provide a safe and reliable railway, to maintain and enhance the railway infrastructure and ensures careful stewardship of financial resources.
